Set a few canals back from the more touristy center of Amsterdam, this shop has the cozy feel of a quiet neighborhood mainstay, especially since the majority of the shop is in the native language. And located in a neighborhood that is much more inhabited by locals than the throngs of tourists found elsewhere, it’s the kind of bookshop that I’d love to have on my block if I lived in Amsterdam year round (and don’t tempt me with a great idea).

If we can be honest with one another, the truth is that this isn’t really a bookshop. It’s a media shop. Do they sell books? Yes. A lot of books? Some. More than a few shops I’ve reviewed. Did I buy some books? Hell yes, I did. So that’s good enough for me to call them a bookstore too.

I don’t visit the small city of Amsterdam very often, but if I ever do find myself there on the banks of the Mohawk River, The Book Hound is one place I’d certainly visit again. Although the shop did have the feel of a place that didn’t get heavy traffic, it did have plenty of surprises waiting within.
