A Review of The Book House of Stuyvesant Plaza

A Review of The Book House of Stuyvesant Plaza

1475 Western Ave., Albany, NY

The Book House of Stuyvesant Plaza, an Albany literary institution at this point, recently moved its location just a few doors down in the same plaza. The original location will always have a special place in my heart because I bought my first book of poetry there, back in the spring of 2005, and it changed my life, giving me a creative outlet I never had before. Here’s hoping someone has that same experience in this bright new space.

And brighter it is by far, with a whole row of windows that simply flooded the space with early spring light. And with higher ceilings and a wider sitting area/event space, the new shop feels as spacious as it is bright. Now there are still a few corners and aisles that feel tight (the YA nook in particular) but overall the browsing experience was a beauty, especially the long, tall wall of fiction in the back of the shop. With stylish wallpaper and lighting fixtures, the new space has a great vibe that should only enhance itself over time.

Aside from the huge wall of fiction, there’s also a substantial children’s corner, complete with the famous house children can crawl inside of to read or just hide while their parents browse. Along with picture and chapter books, there’s an abundance of educational items, toys, stuffed animals, games, puzzles, and more. The shop has plenty of adult puzzles too (we almost always buy one here when we’re in need at my house), and there are many shelves dedicated to the most necessary of sub-genres. The horror and poetry sections feel a tad light for my specific tastes, but truly the shop is a joy to browse and I’m very excited to return in warmer weather to partake of lounging in the front “plaza/garden” space provided out front for events, hanging out, etc.

The new home for one of Albany’s best bookstores feels right, and hopefully they continue to grow into the abundant space, bolster their collection, bringing in readers and writers for events, and keep the Albany area flush with new literary offerings. If you’re in the area, the new space is a must-see book browsing experience.

Atmosphere — Bright, new, and still under slight construction as of spring 2026, this new location not far from the old has the same good vibes but with much more natural light and some really stylish touches throughout (that wallpaper is A+).

Quality — The shop focuses on new books, so the quality is excellent.

Quantity — There’s a lot to find here, especially fiction and children’s. The smaller genre areas can feel a tad light but they’re growing into a new home, so let’s give it time.

Diversity — There’s a good range of offerings here, plenty of local topics, fiction, children’s YA, new nonfiction, biographies, etc.

Affordability — The old location used to have discount tables, then just a discount cart, and I didn’t spot that this time but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t there or won’t make a return. I do love a bookshop with a few extra discounts available.

Amenities — Lots of spots to sit and take a break, which is really nice in a shop you want to invest some time exploring. Plus the usual array of bookstore gifts, and there are plenty of places nearby (in the same plaza) to eat.

Location — In a brand new space at Stuyvesant Plaza near the nexus of the Northway, I-90, and Western Ave. with plenty of parking. It’s down on the far end next to Sur La Table.

Customer Service — The staff were mostly waiting to help up at the front desk, but have always been friendly and welcoming.

Overall — This is an excellent start for the shop’s new home. Bright natural light, lots of space for books and events, and beautiful decorative touches throughout. With the “lawn” space out front and plenty of room inside, I’m excited to see this become a hot spot for literary events.
